Cloning: Background
1074 Words - 4 Pages.... of Scottish scientists used the procedure to clone a sheep. This event marked the first time a mammal had been cloned in this way ("Clone"). The scientist who started cloning is Ian Wilmut (who led the group) (Recer). He cloned Dolly using the nucleus from the cell of its mother, and it had an exact genetic replica of its mother. This spurred arguments about cloning humans (Recer). After Wilmut hinted he may be repeating his experiment to silence the critics (Recer). Wilmut does not have the courage to repeat his experiment, also that the government will never allow him to repeate it.
Another reason for cloning is that before it was done and even now scientists think cloni ....

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
3526 Words - 13 Pages.... When a muscle has no nourishment, it "Atrophies" or wastes away. "Lateral" identifies the areas in a person's spinal cord where portions of the nerve cells that nourish the muscles are located. As this area degenerates it leads to scarring or hardening ("Sclerosis") in the region.
Over 5,000 Americans are diagnosed with ALS each year. There is great variation in the course of the disease. Symptoms usually appear in individuals between the ages of 40-70, though the disease has been reported in both younger and older persons. Survival after the confirming diagnosis is, on average, two to five years. Progression of ALS varies with each individual; therefore, some will live lon ....

Nuclear Fusion
886 Words - 4 Pages.... from 500 liters of water) and 15g of Tritium (produced from 30g of Lithium) would produce enough fuel for the lifetime electricity needs of an average person in an industrialized country. (Environmental Organizations, Source 4)
The problems with fusion have been numerous. One of the problems is attaining the correct temperature for fusion to take place without using more energy then you produce. Fusion reactions occur at a sufficient rate only at very high temperatures. Over 100 million degrees Celsius is needed for the Deuterium-Tritium reaction, while other reactions require even higher temperatures. (Hotta Labs, Source 1)
The density of fuel ions must be sufficientl ....

Bacteria And Their Effects
291 Words - 2 Pages.... from the atmosphere into ammonia in the soil
that plants can use in a process called nitrogen fixation.Bacteria are good
for recycling because they feed on dying material and convert it back into
basic substances.Without decomposition the food chain would cease.Bacteria
also helps in the breakdown on rocks which influences the movement of key
elements,such as,sulfur,iron,phosphorus,and carbon,around the
world.Bacteria are the main digesters of cellulose within cows and other
animals.Bacteria are used in the making of dairy products.Without bacteria
the dairy industry would not exist.Bacteria are also helpful in sewage
treatment. These certain bacterias convert the organic ma ....

Endangered Species 3
2194 Words - 8 Pages.... activity or natural disaaters. One way or the other, species like the Silver-Back Gorilla or the Black-footed Ferret almost face extinction. The death of these animals each year are all different and sometimes so simple.
There are two different kinds of causes that drastically cut Down the number of these endangered species:
Direct Causes
Direct Causes is when the animals are purposely hunted, trapped, fished, whaled, or seled to extinction. Hunting for sport has been responsible for endangering such animals as the Pol ....

The Big Bang And Steady State Models

into galaxies. The universe has continued to expand, and the galaxies have
continued moving away from each other ever since. Today the universe is
still expanding, as astronomers have observed.
The Steady State model says that the universe does not evolve or
change in time. There was no beginning in the past, nor will there be
change in the future. This model assumes the perfect cosmological
principle. This principle says that the universe is the same everywhere on
the large scale, at all times.2 It maintains the same average density of
matter forever. ....
