Gulf War Syndrome
3627 Words - 14 Pages.... Gunjan Sinja states that scientist Garth Nicolson, chairman of tumor biology at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, defines the syndrome as Mycoplasma fermentans. Sinha also stated that Mycoplasma fermentan was “the most poorly studied bug on the list (Sinha 70).” Nicolson has found that the M. fermentans is nested inside the cells of almost half of all cases. Sinha defines Mycoplasmas as “the smallest self-replicating life form that latch onto white bloodcells, which are part of the body’s disease defenses, with a hooklike tip; then they transmit chemical signal that force blood cells to behave abnormally (Sinha 70). ....

Anti-Matter
1209 Words - 5 Pages.... extremely high-energy gamma photons are produced. Today's
theories of the universe say that there is no such thing as a negative mass.
The second and more subtle mistake is the idea that anti-water would
only annihilate with ordinary water, and could safety be kept in (say) an
iron container. This is not so: it is the subatomic particles that react so
destructively, and their arrangement makes no difference.
Scientists at CERN in Geneva are working on a device called the LEAR
(low energy anti-proton ring) in an attempt to slow the velocity of the
anti-protons to a billionth of their normal speeds. The slowing of the
anti-protons and positrons, which normally ....

Is Science Necessary For Our Future?
653 Words - 3 Pages.... of the human race.
Dr. Frankenstein was a scientific genius and ambitious in his
studies. When he tried to use his genius to prolong life, he found he had
the power to create life. The doctor's scientific success in creating the
monster was ultimately a failure for morality. Frankenstein, upon
completion of his monster, realized the immorality of his work and rejected
it and disassociated himself from it and science. The result of
Frankenstein's immorality was death for just about everyone he loved and
utter despair for himself. The monster was not necessary for our future
and neither were the methods of his creation. Because of the doctor's
irresponsibilit ....

Global Warming 2 -
642 Words - 3 Pages.... because of increased carbon dioxide and methane in the earth because of emissions from polluters such as factories and cars, excess energy is trapped in the earth's atmosphere and causes a warming of the earth called "Global Warming."
Starting in the mid-1700s, human activities began to alter the composition of the atmosphere. Vast supplies of charcoal, and later coal and oil, fed the growing fires of the Industrial Revolution. The carbon stored in these fuels was released to the air as carbon dioxide - a gas that traps heat in the atmosphere. Today, for every one of the more than 5.8 billion people on Earth, nearly six tons of carbon dioxide is spewed into the air every ....

Orangutans
1005 Words - 4 Pages.... characteristics
between the two subspecies of orangutans and it has recently been suggested that
they may be a separate species. The Borneo male has relatively large cheek
pads, a tremendous laryngeal sac and a square shaped face. The Sumatran male
has small pads and laryngeal sac, a ginger coloured moustache, a pronounced
beard, and a diamond shaped face. Individuals can also be distinguished
chromosomally, biochemically, and by their cranial characteristics.
There is a great deal of individual variety in the orangutan. "Each
orang-utan had a distinct personality and in dealing with such highly
intelligent animals in captivity, the keeper's knowledge of the in ....

Hemophilia
1118 Words - 5 Pages.... In females, however, only one of the two chromosomes will be abnormal. (unless she is unlucky enough to inherit haemophilia from both sides of the family, which is rare.)2 The other chromosome is likely to be normal and she can therefore compensate for this defect. There are two types of haemophilia, haemophilia A and B. Haemophilia A is a hereditary disorder in which bleeding is due to deficiency of the coagulation factor VIII (VIII:C)3. In most of the
cases, this coagulant protein is reduced but in a rare amount of
cases, this protein is present by immunoassay but defective.4
Haemophilia A is the most common severe bleeding disorder and
approximately 1 in 10,000 males is ....

Vivisection
349 Words - 2 Pages.... row? They are just going to die anyway. They should have a choice to do something good first for man kind. I think a several people would volunteer because if scientists find a cure for something the inmate would be known as a hero. I do not think they should make them do it because they have rights too. Inmates should be able to do it if they want. The inmates should be asked that question by the judge when they are being sentenced for their crime.
I understand that there is another opinion to this debate. I can almost understand why they would believe in . The only time I believe it should be used is for patients dying of cancer. I still do not think it is right. ....

B E C: The New Phase Of Matter
383 Words - 2 Pages.... trapped rubidium atoms and then supercooled the atoms to
almost absolute zero. The graphic on the cover shows the Bose-Einstien
condensation, where the atom's velocities peak at close to zero velocity, and
the atoms slowly emerge from the condensate. The atoms were slowed to the low
velocity by using laser beams. The hardware needed to create the BEC is a
bargain at $50,000 to $1000,000 which makes it accessible to physics labs around
the world.
The next step is to test the new phase of matter. We do not know yet if
it absorbs, reflects,or refracts light. BEC is related to superconductivity and
may unlock some mysteries of why some minerals are able to conduct e ....
