This had serious radiological, health, social and economic consequences for the populations of Belarus, Ukraine and Russia, and to some extent they are still suffering from these consequences. Although the radiological impact of the accident in other countries was generally very low, and even insignificant outside Europe, this event enchanted public apprehension all over the world on the risks associated with the use of nuclear energy.

Ben Franklins Autobiography
1667 Words - 7 Pages.... of self and society seem to conflict, we discover a Franklin who from almost the beginning tries to find a way to be a good citizen as well as a good man, a friend both to himself and to others.
What shall we make of the motives the author gives for writing the Autobiography itself? Franklin explicitly lists eight reasons (Lemay 1307-8): (1) his son (though anyone may become Franklin's moral descendant) may have a filial interest in the events of his ancestor's life; (2) Franklin has the time and ability to write a good memoir; (3) his moral posterity, desiring self-improvement, may want to imitate those actions, "suitable to their own Situations," that led to Franklin' ....

Terminology relevent to a theoretical account of an event is given by
Talcott Parsons in {The Structure of Social Action}. Here, action is
described as a system that may be divided into unit acts. The unit act
consists of four elements. First there is an agent, or actor. Second, the
act has an end which is a future state of affairs or goal towards which the
action is oriented. Third, there is a situation where the trends of
develop- ment differ from the end towards which the action is oriented. The
situation is composed of two elements; the conditions are that which the
actor cannot manipulate in accordance with his end, and the means are that
over which he d ....

Slavery - Underground Rail Road
1501 Words - 6 Pages.... is quite varied according to whom you are talking. Slavery in America thrived and continued to grow because there was a scarcity of labor. Cultivation of crops on plantations could be supervised while slaves used simple routines to harvest them, the low price at which slaves could be bought, and earning profits as a bonus for not having to pay hired work.
Slaves turned to freedom for more than one reason. Some were obsessed with being free and living a life where they were not told how to live. Others ran due to fear of being separted or sold from friends and family. Then there were some who were treated so cruely, that it forced them to run just to stay alive. Since coming ....

Rahotep And Nefret
943 Words - 4 Pages.... Nefert are made of limestone, one of the most accessible and popular materials used for sculpture in the Nile Valley, and are 120 cm high. After these statues were carved out of two single blocks of rock, they were covered with a thin layer of plaster and painted. Copper chisels and stone tools were most probably used to carve them. Like most other seated statues, the stone between their arms and their body has not been cut away. This is intentional; it is supposed to convey a sense of power and prevent breakage. The two figures also exhibit frontality, an attribute shared by the vast majority of three-dimensional Egyptian art. They are both facing perfectly straight ....

For Another Man's Freedom
527 Words - 2 Pages.... "rebirth" of
America. The only problem with these thoughts is that these were not the
thoughts that were in the heads of the soldiers at the time. During the
fighting these soldiers not only did not see this as the rebirth of a nation,
but had "forgotten the cause" altogether. I do not believe that these men were
necessarily fighting specifically for the rights of the slaves, but rather for
the rights of all men including themselves. These men were thought to be
"privileged", and at the time I am sure they believed that they were taking part
in an inconceivable historical event. I am sure that at that time they did not
realize that this would be an ongoing struggle eve ....

The Manhattan Project
1621 Words - 6 Pages.... an appropriate topic because I am presently studying
World War 2 in my Social Studies Class. The Hiroshima and Nagasaki
bombings were always taught to me with some opinion, and I always wanted to
know the bomb itself and the unbiased effects that it had. This I-search
was a great opportunity for me to actually fulfill my interest.
The Manhattan Project was the code name for the US effort during World War
II to produce the atomic bomb. It was appropriately named for the
Manhattan Engineer District of the US Army Corps of Engineers, because much
of the early research was done in New York City. Sparked by refugee
physicists in the United States, the program was slowly organ ....
