Herodotus' The History
1319 Words - 5 Pages.... particularly in their willingness to serve absolute despots and their grotesque use of eunuchs, the practice of circumcision, and their strange gods further distinguished them from the Greeks. By contrast, Herodotus’ viewed the Greeks as virile and independent, proudly fighting in defense of their cities, their families, their gods, and for their own freedom and dignity. Thus, the theme of The History of Herodotus is the struggle between the East and the West. The East, represented by the Persian Empire, signified tyranny and oppression. The West, represented by the Greek city-states, signified freedom. As Herodotus interprets the Persian Wars we see the beginning ....

The Pardoner's Prologue And Tale
1833 Words - 7 Pages.... two Prologues 'literary confession' but neither of Chaucer's characters expresses any sign of regret. Rather, the two prologues are rooted in satirical traditions in which a figure embodying some vice speaks a 'confession,' almost entirely without shame, illustrating the way it lives. Chaucer found examples of this in the Romance of the Rose, the Pardoner's Prologue has some vague similarities with the figure Faux-Semblant (False Seeming) found there.
As seen in the General Prologue, a pardoner is a layman who sells pardons or indulgences, certificates from the pope by which people hoped to gain a share in the merits of the saints and escape more lightly from the pains of P ....

In Cold Blood: Summary
922 Words - 4 Pages.... didn't even know the
Clutter family went into their house and shot all four of them.
There were two main characters. Dick is the first one that I will talk about.
Dick was 33 years old and he did not have the best character. Dick was one who
helped participate in the killing of the Clutter family. I didn't like him from
the very beginning. He struck me as the type that is your friend one minute and
enemy the next. Perry is the other charecter that I will talk about. Perry
wasn't as bad as Dick but yet he still struck me as having a bad character for
what he did to the family. It took me awhile to get a good impression of Perry.
Perry was a really nice guy and I think th ....

Atticus seeks the truth in everything, like in the Tom Robinson
case. Even Judge Taylor knew that Tom was innocent, which is why he got
Atticus to defend him. Still Atticus sought the truth in the case, even
though it was the 1930's and a black man's word was not as good as a white
person's word. Atticus believed in Tom. He makes a good lawyer because of
this trait of seeking the truth.
Atticus would be kind to everyone. He gives Mayella the title
Miss..., and treats her nicer than people usually would. She wasn't
comfortable with it, but that is the way he is. Atticus is trying to teach
his children to be courteous to everyone, too. Atticus always thi ....

The Storm By Kate Chopin
2368 Words - 9 Pages.... woman" (Seyersted 1969, p164). "The Storm" was not published, however, until well after Chopin's death, doubtless because of the as-yet unparalleled sensuousness of the story and its characters. In his critical biography Kate Chopin, Per Seyersted argues that "The Storm" is objective in its portrayal of human sexuality and that Chopin is "not consciously speaking as a woman, but as an individual" (p169). One must question this assertion, however; it is doubtful that in writing "The Storm" so soon after completing her 'feminist' novel, Chopin had "the protest of "The Awakening" off her mind" (p169).
The Coming of the Storm
The title of "The Storm", with its obvious ....
