Augustine And Love
1016 Words - 4 Pages.... make me wonder how can he be in love with love, if he isn’t in love.
After stating this, Augustine continues to support his statement by talking about friendship. Is the friendship Augustine mentions lustful or sincerely about love? “Thus I polluted the stream of friendship with the filth of unclean desire and sullied its limpidity with the hell of lust.” (pg. 35) Obviously Augustine is letting the idea of love turn straight to lust. He talks about unclean desires, but he says he wants to be clean and courtly. Maybe Augustine has the wrong idea about love. Love is when you care deeply about someone and will do anything for them. Thinking about sexual desi ....

"Paul's Case": Willa Cathers
1090 Words - 4 Pages.... His house and Cordelia Street portrayed such a deprivation
and ugliness; his room with its yellow dingy wallpaper and the painted
wooden bed that had began to flake. "The nearer he approached the house
the more absolutely unequal Paul felt to the sight of it all; his ugly
sleeping chamber, the cold bathroom with the grimy zinc tub..." His
school was described with having "bare floors and naked walls".
Paul's uplifting arena was either glaring up at the actors, divas,
or performers at the Schenley Hotel or at the works of art at Carnegie
Hall. Even though he had spent numerous days fantasizing at masterpieces
and stage plays, Paul "had no desire to become an actor ....

Great Expectations: Symbolism
838 Words - 4 Pages.... visit to the Satis House, Pip overheard Miss Havisham tell Estella
"Well? You can break his heart." [65]. By doing what Miss Havisham tells her to,
she shows she is just as heartless as her stepmother. She also represents
manipulation in how she played with Pip's feelings, who has strong feelings for
her eventhough he also cannot stand her. She tells Pip "Come here! You may kiss
me if you like." [102]. Although the kiss may have meant a lot to Pip, it did
not mean anything to Estella as she was just playing with Pip's emotions.
The character of Magwitch represents the symbols of isolation and the tragic
hero. In this case, he was physically isolated from society because ....

Flatland: Social Satire Of Victorian English Society
767 Words - 3 Pages.... women who were thin straight lines are the lowliest of shapes, and where men may have any number of sides, depending on their social status therefore giving the highest and most respected class in Flatland to the circular or Priestly order who control Flatland.
Priests in Flatland are a certain type of polygon. A circle in fact, "that is considered a polygon because of the large number of small sides that the polygon contains. As the number of the sides increases, a polygon approximates to circle; and, when the number is very great indeed, say for example three or four hundred, it is the most difficult for any delicate touch to feel a polygonal angle." It is also safe to ....

The Hidden Life Of Dogs: Book Review
729 Words - 3 Pages.... Beginning with an introductory character, Misha who was a Husky,
began the book well. This book tried to get the idea across that humans knew
only very little about dogs and their patterns. After intense observations on
Misha, some ideas were brought up. How did the dog know how to cross a highway
on its own? How did its navigational skills work? How was it that this dog knew
exactly where it was and could travel through different cities without becoming
lost and other dogs couldn't? Continuing on to bringing in other dogs Elizabeth
was studying, she pointed out that some had skills that others did not. Misha
was clearly able to navigate himself but when with another dog ....

The Grapes Of Wrath: Description Al Joad And The Setting
431 Words - 2 Pages.... Joad family is forced to leave their home land and
travel to California, Al takes on a great responsibility. His job is to
drive the family and take complete care of the truck that they are driving.
Al takes his job very seriously and gets upset when anything happens to the
car. Emotionally, I would say Al has become very strong throughout the
novel. He starts out pretty depend on the "glory" of his brother, but he
takes his responsibilities seriously. I see Al as being a crucial
character later in the novel. He is the kind of person that needs
motivation from the start, but once he gets going, he won't stop.
Setting Description
Oklahoma could best be described as one ....

From this discussion Brian concludes that the father pigeon places the baby in the egg and the baby pigeons grow while the mother pigeon is laying the egg. When the baby pigeon grows as much as it needs to grow, it hatches out of the egg. This explanation leaves Brian quite confused and uninformed of natures way to reproduce. At this stage Brian seems to understand that humans and animals reproduce babies the same way.
Brian's second encounter with birth is again with Forbsie as the two experiences the birth of ra ....
