Kafka's The Trial: The Reality Of Guilt
2762 Words - 11 Pages.... Joseph is executed superficially without conviction. Probing
deeper, however, one ponders the question of original sin. Is Joseph
guilty for merely existing? Is his incessant denial of committing a
criminal offense a crime in its self? In 'The Trial," Joseph may not be
guilty in the sense of committing a sin, but could be guilt itself.
An important note to keep in mind while reading "The Trial" is Kafka's
structural organization of paragraphs. Most of the paragraphs are
confusing and lengthy; some even more than one or two pages long. In
chapter two when Joseph is speaking at the Court of Inquiry, he is abruptly

The Pardoner And The "Brothers"

Pardoner's tale, three friends begin a journey in order to murder Death. On
their journey, though, an old man leads them to a great deal of treasure.
At this point, all three of the friends in the tale display a greed similar
to the Pardoner's. The three friends decide that someone should bring
bread and wine for a celebration. As the youngest of the friends leaves to
go buy wine, the other two greedily plot to kill him so they can split the
treasure only two ways. Even the youngest decides to "put it in his mind
to buy poison / With which he might kill his two companions" (383, 384).

Mark Twain Wishes To Bring Attention To Man's Often Concealed Shortcomings

father. Kept in a veritable prison, Huck wishes desperately to escape. Jim feels
the need to escape after hearing that his owner, Miss Watson, wishes to sell him
down the river-a change in owners that could only be for the worse. As they
escape separately and rejoin by chance at an island along the river, they find
themselves drawn to get as far as possible from their home. Their journey down
the river sets the stage for most of Mark Twain's comments about man and society.
