The Great Gatsby: The Destructive Effects Of Wealth
416 Words - 2 Pages.... Instead, the superficial
power of money has led him astray from his wife. The fact that you have
money doesn't mean you can do whatever you please.
A marital relationship should be heavily based on love. I got none
of that love from Tom's and Daisy's marriage. Their constant irritating
remarks, and interruptions make it seem that there is no love between them.
They seem like a couple in their 80's who are sick and tired of each
other. The fact that they came from rich families probably attributed to
their snobby behavior.
The attitude in the first chapter showed a lot of the ugliness
attributed to wealth. Tom especially showed little and at times no sign
of a pleasan ....

The Lottery: Theme And Irony
420 Words - 2 Pages.... drawing of the lottery from the black box, giving the reader the impression that these people must want the prize. When Tessie starts to complain about being chosen the reader knows it is no longer a positive situation. Then irony strikes when the other villagers stone Tessie to death. The title is ironic because when one thinks of a lottery it is looked on as an amusement to test one’s luck in order to win a prize.
Tessie’s death is seen as another irony. Tessie could not restrain from stoning another person but when she found out she was to be stoned she threw a fit. Tessie could not wait to go to the drawing. It was a major event and tradition in their villag ....

The Blue Hotel
656 Words - 3 Pages.... be a microcosm because it is the central point for all of the story’s characters. The only place that they interact with each other is inside of the hotel and the main points of the story happen there. All of the violent confrontations happen in the hotel or around its grounds. The main fight between the Swede and Johnny is outside in the bitter cold in the street. The hotel could possibly change the characters thinking and cause them to be really weird. This is shown when Scully shows the Swede pictures of his dead family (269). What person in their “right” mind would show someone who thinks they are going to be killed a picture of someone who was killed? These exampl ....

Cold Blood: Myrt
882 Words - 4 Pages.... for Mr. Clutter. Mr. Clutter was a well known man. He had a lot going
for him, he made decisions and had power. Mr. Clutter was active in the
community and a family man.
When Myrt described her neighbors as “rattlesnakes and varmints
looking for a chance to slam the door in your face.” That statement can be
taken two different ways: (1). how the town treated her when she gave them
their mail, or (2) the neighbors were untrustworthy and false. Myrt’s
attitude towards her neighbors makes the reader think she is envious and
hypocritical.
Holcomb did show a friendly side. The town seemed to act more like
friends that did for each other than friends that just associ ....

The Sun Also Rises: A Review
676 Words - 3 Pages.... me to
bring it out slowly, so I often found myself reading five or ten pages and
laying it aside to absorb without engulfing. A man gets used to reading Star
Wars and pulp fiction and New York Times Bestsellers and forgets what literature
is until it slaps him in the face. This book was written, not churned out or
word-processed. Again, I thoroughly enjoyed reading.
I never noticed it until it was brought up in class, maybe because it wasn't a
point for me in In Our Time, but He doesn't often enough credit quotations with,
",he said," or, ",said Brett," or, ",Bill replied." In SAR it stood and called
attention to itself. I wasn't particularly bothered by His not telling ....

Arugumentative Essay On The Gl
932 Words - 4 Pages.... mother from those of
a good mother, it was made obvious that Amanda was a selfish mother, putting her needs ahead of her children's. Amanda ultimately cared for herself more than her children
Domineering is one of Amanda's strongest characteristics. She notices her children's weaknesses rather than their strong points, demonstrating this
quality. She would constantly downplay her children about what they had become. "Sounds to me like a fairly responsible job you would be in if you just had more get-up." (Act 1, Scene V, pg. 54.) Amanda could never show any
recognition for what her children had achieved. After Laura had dropped out of business school, Amanda was very pessimi ....

20,000 Leagues Under The Sea
432 Words - 2 Pages.... off. Once in a while the monster will disappear from sight for hours. While reading this part of the book the reader feels like he is on the boat chasing the monster also. A lot of times the boat gets close enough to the monster to catch it and thoughts of what you think the monster could be run through your head like crazy. When they finally make an attempt to capture it, it disappears beneath the depths of the ocean.
One of the most suspenseful and mysterious parts of the book was when the characters were thrown into a big room inside the submarine that seemed to have no doors. At this point in the book the characters have no idea what was going on, nei ....

The Great Gatsby: Morals And American Idealism
760 Words - 3 Pages.... the money which was virtually given to him when
he was younger so now the great wealth is out to destroy him in a way.
Gatsby takes things for granted because he didn't have to word to
get the Upper Class status which he now has. An example of this is also
one of the main parts of the story. Daisy, Nick's cousin and the wife of
Tom Buchanon, once knew Gatsby when they were in high school together and
they had a thing going. After a while they separated and Gatsby went into
the Armed Forces. Now, at the time when this story takes place in the
spring of the 1920's Daisy and Gatsby still have a thing for each other and
their growing romance develops throughout. Taking wha ....
