During the time period while she is away Henchard is lonly and depressed. After many things have hapend Elizabeth-Jane returns to Henchard. He realizes a new love for his step-daughter taht is brought up in her presents, when he is not alone. When Elizabeth-Jane's true father comes to the house asking for her Henchard tells him she is dead while actually a ....

.... scene, the reader learns that the prisoner has committed adultery, a very serious crime in her puritan town, and that she must wear a scarlet letter on the bodice of her dress. This letter is an A, a constant reminder of the sin that was committed. The next scaffold scene involves Hester, Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale (the father of Mrs. Prynne’s illegitimate child), and Pearl (the illegitimate child). Here, we find that the Reverend’s guilt over his sin becomes too much to bear alone. Dimmesdale goes to the scaffold to confess to God. Soon after, Hester and Pearl arrive, and join Dimmesdale on the scaffold. A meteor that appears and leaves an image of the scarlet ....

.... was an idealist. The fact that John Sartoris was able to get away with murder and be elected into public office soon after is a strong example of this. There were not many pragmatists in the novel. By definition, a pragmatist is one who believes that the meaning of conceptions is to be sought in their practical bearings, that the function of thought is to guide action, and that truth is preminently to be tested by the practical consequences of belief. Bayard Sartoris was a pragmatist. He 'let his conscience be his guide'. Telling his father about Drusilla's attempt to seduce him and refusing to avenge his father's death are two good examples of this. In the beginnin ....

Even in the end of the novel when he confesses he is about to leave the country, still running away from his problems, never facing the consequence of his sin. The townspeople dont want to believe his sin anyway because they think to highly of him. He neglected his parental responsibilities as a father by not keeping in touch with Pearl and Hester. This was a very sinful thing to do. When Pearl asks him if he will stand with them on the scaffold he says no, just crushing the child. And Hester does nothing cut enc ....
