Get Informed! - Buying The Right Computer
801 Words - 3 Pages

.... the programmers don't worry about how much memory they use. When writing a program, programmers use compilers like Visual C++. When they use prewritten routines from compilers, it adds a lot of useless data. Instead of removing this useless data, the lazy programmer leaves it. Not only does this effect you memory, it also effects how much hard drive space you need. The bigger the program, the more space it takes to save physically. I wouldn't suggest buying anything under a 2 geg hard drive. Why? Because by the time you load you system (Windows95, DOS) and other software; your hard drive is already filled up. How are you going to save your document you wrote in Wor ....

Optical Storage Mediums
997 Words - 4 Pages

.... of the track we use is dependent only on one thing - the color of the light we use. An optical medium typically involves some sort of laser, for laser light does not diverge, so we can pinpoint it to a specific place on the disk. By moving the laser a little bit, we can change tracks on a disk, and this movement is very small, usually less than a hairÕs width. This allows one to store an immense amount of data on one disk. The light does not touch the disk surface, thereby not creating friction, which leads to wear, so the life of an average optical disk is far longer than that of a magnetic medium. Also, it is impossible to ÒcrashÓ an optical disk (in the same sen ....

Fiber Optic Cable
452 Words - 2 Pages

.... idea of using arrays of hollow pipes or transparent rods to transmit images for television or facsimile systems. However, the first person that was known to have demonstrated image transmission through a bundle of optical fibers was a guy by the name of Heinrich Lamm whom which was a medical student at Munich. His goal was to be able to look inside inaccessible parts of the human body, and in a 1930 paper he reported transmitting the image of a light bulb filament through a short bundle. However the unclad fibers transmitted the images poorly, and the rise of the Nazis forced Lamm, a Jew, to move to the USA and give up his dream of becoming a professor of medicine. A lot of t ....

Computers: Productive Tools In Our Lives
795 Words - 3 Pages

.... with the program. To do that, the minimum system requirements are a C.P.U. or the central processing unit, a keyboard, a monitor, a mouse, and if you want, a printer and a CD - ROM drive. The C.P.U. is that part of a computer that faithfully does what his master tells him to do, with the help of input devices like a keyboard or a mouse. After all this so called sophisticated, next generation equipment, you need some sort of software. Software is a set of instructions to the C.P.U. from a source such as a floppy disk, a hard drive or a CD - ROM drive, in zillions of 1's and 0's. Each of these tiny little instructions makes up a bit. Then they assemble to form a byte. Bytes ....

Internal Combustion Engines
3046 Words - 12 Pages

.... of large ships requiring over 4,000 shaft horsepower ( hp). In stationary applications, size of unit and local factor often determine the choice between the use of steam and diesel engine. Diesel power plants have a distinct economic advantage over steam engine when size of the plant is under about 1,000 hp. However there are many diesel engine plants much large than this. Internal combustion engines are particularly appropriate for seasonal industries, because of the small standby losses with these engines during the shutdown period. History The first experimental internal combustion engine was made by a Dutch astronomer, Christian Huygens, who, in 1680, applied a ....
