The Hype: Television
826 Words - 4 Pages.... for a life that cherishes inanimate objects. We falsely believe that "stuff" will give us a feeling of happiness that was once openly available to generations before us.
How did we become such a consumer-happy society? One obvious reason is television. With the introduction of television, the public entered a fanatical world that made our own lives seem unreal. Americans began to yearn for lives of intrigue and notoriety. With a touch of a button, the television takes viewers "out of the 'real' world in which [they] reside and can place [them] at a basketball game, the back alleys of Maine, the streets of Bucharest, or the cartooning living rooms of Sitcom land (Ha ....

806 Words - 3 Pages.... government who should
intervene. When I look at what the government has done with regard to the
homeless problem, I have to doubt that everything is being done to

human rights. Article 25 Section 1 of this declaration states:
Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the
health and well being of himself and of his family, including food,
clothing, housing, and medical care and necessary social services, and to
the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability,
widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his
control.

Culture, Nature & Freedom: Treating Juvenile Offenders.
1240 Words - 5 Pages.... ideal here is the Master/slave dialectic
between staff and youth. The sides work apart. The two can't join because one
does not experience the other. There is no way to be “above the veil” of their
status. In a residential treatment modality, Relationship building is key to
success. The youth need to feel the veil has been lifted. It allows them to
explore safely and see the world in a greater view. The view as other is removed
and a true balance displaces the master / slave one.
Next, we can look at Mills Ideas on culture. He would like to elevate the
morals of the human mind. To do this, we must continually test the standard. New
ideas must be able to circulate fr ....

Gender Roles: The Discrimination Against Men
1137 Words - 5 Pages.... the sexism directed against men." (249) Women
and men should be treated as equals, however, more attention is directed
towards discrimination towards women. In the 1990s, the men's movement
arose in society to try and deal with the problem of sexism against men.
This movement came about due to a medley of factors: women's criticisms of
men's shortcomings as husbands, fathers, and lovers; the debilitating
pressures of the economy and men's unequal responsibility to succeed in the
workplace, to prove their worth by making money; and men's confusion over
what it means to be a man today.
There are many stereotypes about men and women that are heard every
day. The most comm ....

Down With Community Service
464 Words - 2 Pages.... rather than a privilege to citizens. He said that
people should not do work that they do not get paid for, unless they really
wanted to. This is one of the reasons that supports my disagreement to the
article.
Most young people do not have enough extra time to do community service.
I have been doing a survey about the subject matter for a few days, and I have
come up with some interesting results. It seems that eight out of ten students
that are about to graduate high school are planning to go to college after they
graduate. I also asked them about doing community service. Most of them said
that they would be getting a job, and they would not have time to do commu ....

sprung up all over the nation. Raves are held in remote locations. From

buildings/mines/ The reason why they are so remote is because of the loud
music that is played, the large crowds it attracts, and basically so that
no authority-such as police find ‘em and break up the scene.

real barriers. Soraya Mire, a 13-year-old from Mogadishu, Somolia, never
knew what would happen to her the day her mother called her out of her
room to go buy her some gifts. When asked why, her mother replied, "I just

wondered where the armed guards were. Being the daughter of a Somolian
