.... Young people are victims of guns. Obviously, the question of just what restrictions, if any, should be placed on these firearms is as much a matter of concern to them as to their elders. Still, it is to their elders, the leaders among them at least, that they must look for guidance if not perhaps for answers. Gun violence claims over 40,000 American lives a year. Among all consumer products, only motor vehicles outpace guns as a cause of fatal injury, and guns will pass them by 2003 (Violence Policy Center). .... The name "Christian Democratic Party," common in Europe, refers to moral roots, not to theocratic ambitions. The consequence of this separation of church and state is that political contention is not poisoned by religious hatred. There is one exception, Islam, a theocracy which has savaged the world for over a thousand years. Its religious doctrine is that church and state are one and that canon law and civil law are one. It periodically believes that unbelievers must be converted or conquered and that hating infidels is a virtue and killing an infidel is a ticket to heaven. .... Some people show their patriotism by joining the Army, the Navy, the Air Force or the Marines. Americans display their patriotism for their country on the Fourth of July. All across the country, fireworks are seen and patriotic music is played on the radio. This is my favorite holiday because everyon comes together and celebrates. There are not may other countries who have as much pride in their country as the American people do. The biggest excitement of being an American comes from the joy of living in a democracy. We have the right to vote. This means that it is up to us to decide who becomes president of our country. We are very lucky to live in this country ....

The sounds and scenes of violence echo, firing in every direction without concern for targets or casualties. Canadians are developing a vision of themselves as hopeless victims of criminal forces they cannot control and cannot understand. While TV grows rich on violence, the nation is threatened by loss of self-esteem, fear of crime, and fear of our neighbours. A permanent impression is made on the innocent minds of young children too young to read or speak. TV is destroying society's respect for human life.
