Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy
178 Words - 1 Pages.... performed at stratospheric altitudes.
The Observatory will accommodate installation of different focal plane
instruments, with in-flight accessibility, provided by investigators selected
from the international science community. The Observatory objective is to have
an operational lifetime in excess of 20 years.
The SOFIA project is in the early full-scale stage. The start of detailed system
design is anticipated in the Fall of 1996. The German Space Agency (DARA) is a
partner with NASA in the SOFIA project. DARA will provide the telescope and NASA
will provide the rest of the facility including the 747 aircraft, aircraft
modifications, on-board mission control system, ....

Bipolar Disorder 3
792 Words - 3 Pages.... the individual experiencing episodes of mania or elation followed by low mood or depression. The number of manic and depressive episodes varies greatly from person to person and most individuals experience "normal" periods between their manic and depressive episodes.
Manic depression can send a person plunging from a high state, where one may believe one has superhuman energy and abilities, into a pit of despair, where it may seem as if the only way out is suicide.
There are two types of bipolar, bipolar 1 and bipolar 2. Bipolar 1 is diagnosed differently than bipolar 2. Bipolar I is diagnosed when person has a manic episode and has had no depressive episodes in the past. Ho ....

The Nuclear Power Debate
779 Words - 3 Pages.... to produce the equivalent amount of electricity produced from Uranium.
The use of nuclear power opposed to burning fossil fuels has reduced carbon
dioxide emissions by 2 billion tonnes per year, minimising the global warming
effect on the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is responsible for half of man made
gases contributing to the Greenhouse Effect, and has sparked action from the UN
Intergovernment Panel on Climate Change. Their consensus is a concern for the
environment in the next century if fossil fuels continue to be used, even at
present global levels. The Panel claims that for carbon dioxide to be
stabilised to safe levels, a 50-80% reduction in all emi ....

Cold Fusion
954 Words - 4 Pages.... process is exothermic, and can generate energy in one of two ways. Energy can be input in to a system and multiplied, or energy alone can be generated although in a much smaller amount. For example, one watt of energy can be input and 3 watts recovered. Some systems are capable of producing hundreds of watts per individual watt. The actual physics of the reaction is not completely understood. Some claim it is merely a chemical reaction not yet understood, while others are convinced it is a nuclear reaction.
One example is a cell which used .04 grams of metal hydride. It produced 86 megajoules over a two month period. A similar chemical reaction would have requir ....

Mini-Research
286 Words - 2 Pages.... he found the ratio of the charge, e, to the mass, m, of the cathode-ray
particles. He found e/m identical to those particles irrespective of the metal
the electrodes were made of or the kind of gas in the tube. In 1909, RA
Millikan, an American scientist, measured that charge. All electrons are found
to be identical no matter their source or the method of liberating them from
matter. From the values of e/m, and e, the mass of an electron was calculated
to be .00055 amu.
PROTON- Eugeen Goldstein used a Crookes tube with holes in the cathode, and
observed that another kind of ray was emitted from the anode and passed through
the holes. He discovered this in 1886. ....

The Great Imposters
1454 Words - 6 Pages.... the widow bird nestlings can grow up among their alien
nestmates with no risk of being rejected by their foster parents.
MASTERS OF DISGUISE
Things aren't always as they seem, and nowhere is this more true than
in nature, where dozens of animals (and plants) spend their time
masquerading as others. So clever are their disguises that you've probably
never known you were being fooled by spiders impersonating ants, squirrels
that look like shrews, worms copying sea anemones, and roaches imitating
ladybugs. There are even animals that look like themselves, which can also
be a form of impersonation. The phenomenon of mimicry, as it's called
by biologists, was first no ....

We Are Not Alone
1561 Words - 6 Pages.... Conclusion
On June 24th, 1947 while searching for the remains of a downed Marine
C-46 transport, lost somewhere in the Mount Ranier area, a young Idahoan
businessman named Kenneth Arnold spotted something that would change his life
forever. Just north of his position flying at an altitude of 9,500 feet and an
unprecedented airspeed of 1,700 mph he spotted nine circular aircraft flying in
formation. According to his estimate the aircraft were approximately the size
of a DC-4 airliner ( Jackson 4).
This account was the first sighting to ever receive a great deal of
media attention. This sighting gave birth to the phrase "flying Saucer" coined
by a reporter ....

Ozone
1112 Words - 5 Pages.... troposphere which is between zero and
fifteen kilometers in altitude and has tempera- ture ranges from two
hundred to two hundred ninety kelvins. The second is the stratosphere
which ranges from fifteen to approxi- mately fifty kilometers in altitude
and has temperature ranges from two hundred to two hundred fifty kelvins.
The third level in the atmosphere is mesosphere. This level ranges from
fifty to eighty-five kilometers in altitude and has temperature ranges
between one hundred eighty and two hundred fifty kelvins. Finally, the
thermosphere is the final level in the atmosphere. It's range is eighty-
five to one hundred forty kilometers and also temperatures as high ....
