Antigone 3
662 Words - 3 Pages.... active rather than a static figure.
Throughout the play, Antigone amazingly retains the traditional role of women, while at the same time boldly challenges this depiction. This is precisely where the conflict between the sexes rises. The denial of burial to Polynices strikes directly at her family loyalty, for it was the immemorial privilege and duty of the women of the house to mourn the dead man in unrestrained sorrow, sing his praises, wash his body, and consign him to the earth. This enormous sense of loyalty leads to her simultaneous violation and abidement to the duty of women at the time. In order for her to properly mourn her brother, like every sister should, A ....

Leinigen Response
789 Words - 3 Pages.... feared them. He had built this plantation thinking that someday the ants may come. Leiningen thought to himself that he would be ready for them. He incorporated a horseshoe shaped ditch around his plantation. The forth side is a river that can be used quickly to fill the ditch. Toward the middle of the plantation lay another ditch that encircled the barn, house, stables, and other buildings. This ditch was made of concrete, and the inflow pipes of three great petrol tanks could easily be emptied here. If the ants had miraculously made it through the first ditch the second one could be filled with gas which was sure to stop them. This intricate defense system was thou ....

Irony In Poe's Writings
1059 Words - 4 Pages.... he is not
insane unless he is actually so. He is also very proud of his cleverness
in planning the murder, which is ironic, because he is too clever for his
own good. The old man- the victim of the narrator’s madness- is afraid of
burglars and intruders, so he locks his doors and shutters tight. In fact,
his real danger is already inside the house- which is an obvious irony. It
is most ironic that he could have disposed of the body in any other way-
but he chooses to hide it under the floorboards where he will walk over it
every day. His heavy conscience causes him to confess to the police. This
is a great example of his talent with ironies.

Heart Of Darkness
890 Words - 4 Pages.... Kurtz or the brutality of Belgian officials. Conrad wrote a
brief statement of how he felt the reader should interpret this work:
"My task which I am trying to achieve is, by the power of the written
word, to make you hear, to make you feel-it is above all, to make
you see.(Conrad 1897) Knowing that Conrad was a novelist who lived in
his work, writing about the experiences were as if he were writing
about himself. "Every novel contains an element of autobiography-and
this can hardly be denied, since the creator can only explain himself
in his creations."(Kimbrough,158) The story is written as seen through
Marlow's eyes. Marlow is a follower of the s ....

1204 Words - 5 Pages.... In “Cinderella”, both of the stepsisters are wicked, but in “Ever After”, her sister Jacqueline is not so wicked and usually sides with Danielle. In “Ever After”, Jacqueline is the not so pretty and quiet sister and Marguerite is the loud obnoxious pretty one.
One similarity is that in both movies, Cinderella and Danielle are servants to their stepmother and stepsisters. They are also not allowed to eat with them, only serve them. In “Ever After”, Danielle’s only friends are the other servants of the house, this is similar to how Cinderella is friends with the mice that live in her house. In both cases their f ....

In all of the hunters' intense excitement they become overzealous in their pretend killing of the pig and poor Robert is poked and prodded quite harshly with the hunting spears. This was the first time Ralph had let the beast inside of him be seen. All of the boys were showing signs of savagery. William Golding uses this to foreshadow the upcoming deaths brought on by man's animalistic actions.
The forming of two different groups, or tribes, did nothing to lessen the problems. Jack, the leader of the newer yet larger group, based his philosophy of surviving on killing and hunting. On one of his groups hunting trips a wild boa ....
