.... on the behavior of humankind. Through Beowulf, it can be seen that humankind is held back by evil (In this novel, they are in the form of monsters.) in their search for salvation. The monster, Grendel, is described as being a very large and vicious monster. Grendel attacks men while they sleep, ripping them apart and eating them. Grendel is “the creature of evil, grim, and fierce, was quickly ready, savage, and cruel, and seized from their rest thirty thanes.” He killed the Danish warriors for twelve winters, and was incapable of feeling any remorse for what he had done. His friendship with Dfanny Saunders is encouraged by his father, but he is wary of it at first because Danny is a Hasid, and regards regular Orthodox Jews as apikorsim because of the teachings of his father. Reuven goes from not being able to have a civil conversation with Danny to becoming his best friend with whom he spens all of his free time, studies Talmud and goes to college. Reuven truly grows because he leans, as his father says, what it is to be a friend. Another way that Reuven grows is that he learns to appreciate different people and their ideas. .... Journey: The North Coast. In the first poem, North Coast Town, Gray details the experiences of a hitchhiker travelling around the coast. As Gray is an imagist, the poem brings to life the travels of this hitchhiker, who by describing the area gives personal views on the changes seen. Though the important part comes from this, that when travelling in an area that is not known, people become more perceptive. Although the hitchhiker is a native of the area, the issue of change is raised as he himself, does not know the town any more, after the change. Falling snow from a tree blots out the fire and the character realizes "he had just heard his own sentence of death." Jack London introduces death to the reader in this scene. The man realizes "a second fire must be built without fail." The man's mind begins to run wild with thoughts of insecurity and death when the second fire fails. In the same situation, if replaced the teacher with a police officer, he will also be admired, but not as greatly as the teacher. This is because he was trained that way, he has the responsibility, he has prepared to sacrifice therefore, the courage he has paid is far less compare to a teacher who was trained to teach.
