They made me realize that I could learn something from how to treat people who are differnt than me. What I also liked about it was the way they never stopped trying to reach their dream. As the story goes on the town moves from utter igorance “ the world was so recent that many things lacked names” and developes until we are in the modern time with the banana company, telephones and the union until it, towards the end of the book due to heavy rainfall, turns into an uncivilized town again before it´s destroyed in a heavy storm. When Reed arrived at Fort Sutter McCutchen and him heard that the Donner Party was stuck at foot of the Sierra Nevada’s mountains. Therefore, they try to save the Donner Party by traveling to Truckee Lake with supplies. Unfortunately they were unsuccessful and had to turn back, do to heavy snow. Dove’s home seems alien to her. Even the flowers are strangers there. However, as I began to read the story I was able to create background information of my own which changed my opinion about the story altogether. I found the work to be enjoyable in other ways as well. I got the impression that the main character was a younger fellow. His comments and actions sounded more immature than mature, so I was able to relate more closely to the work.
