Citizen Soldiers: A Comparison
1847 Words - 7 Pages.... surrounding World War II.
Ambrose's war novel is based upon the numerous letters, stories, and interviews of the American soldiers who fought in World War II. The reader is taken from the D-Day invasion of Normandy, to the eventual surrender by the Nazis, and all in between. While there is little in the way of main plot or story to this book, there is indeed an overall message that the book conveys, a universal theme. The theme being the unit cohesion, teamwork, and the sense of family that develops within a squad and platoon; which are the qualities most World War II combat veterans point to when asked how they survived and won. Each incident given by a person represen ....

The Great Gatsby
778 Words - 3 Pages.... existed in that time period
against non-whites and women was evident by the time the conclusion of the
book was reached. For instance, a conversation takes place between
characters in the novel in which civilization is said to be going to pieces
as a result of "The Rise of the Coloured Empires". Women are also
constantly referred to as "girls".
Also incorporated, was an interesting but sometimes uneventful and
boring sub-plot of a man's extreme love for a woman and the catastrophic
events that take place as a result. This was indicative of many people of
the day who had a spouse but often had someone else on the side. Although
this book is not the kind that excitin ....

later wakes up to find a cougar ready to pounce on him. The cougar dose
not strike yet because it is waiting for Gordon to move. Gordon knows
better and stayed in the same position for what seemed like hours.
Suddenly, the porcupine returns to look for more food and this disrupts the
cougar. The climax is when Gordon quickly reaches for his gun and shoots
the cougar. The resolution is when Gordon "cries the final tears of his
boyhood" and he is finally a man.

Brave New World 2
1099 Words - 4 Pages.... bad idea, other system is flawed. We see this in people like Bernard. An alpha is supposed to be at the top of society being well formed, tall, good looking and intelligent. Bernard however is somewhat shorter and less handsome than the rest of the men in his caste, and therefore is thought of as queer. This inconsistency in the hatching system shows proof that the system is not completely safe or stable, and will in time produce more and more “social rejects” that can only lead to destroy the system.
The conditioning process itself is also a good example of how innovation and “progress” can lead to the destruction of man. John got this in his belief ....

Social Commentary In Animal Farm
661 Words - 3 Pages.... will be thought as ineffective as feudalism.
The shared characteristics of social commentary and animal metaphor literally, are what make these particular artworks the amazing examples of their respective genres that they are. The animal metaphor tends to depict humans as being motivated by our animalistic desires, as well as the tendency among ourselves to be highly competitive and often, ruthless. In Animal Farm, Orwell puts the pigs as being the leaders, or the exploiters of the masses, depending on your point of view. Waters does the same in Animals, depicting the pigs as uncaring, self-involved, and overbearing masters of the masses. In both works, dogs are an enfo ....

Lord Of The Flies Response
482 Words - 2 Pages.... had their own separate
friends. The choir boys stuck together, the littluns stuck together, Sam and
Eric stuck together, and Piggy and Ralph stayed close by each other. Unless
everyone can work together as a team, everyone will begin fighting. This is
exactly what happened. When they decided on a leader (Ralph) Jack hated it. He
wanted to be leader and thought he was the best for the job. Already he had
started to rebel. He wouldn't do what Ralph said, and tried to get everyone to
disobey him. If the boys do not work together on anything, it's never going to
work. While Jack and others were rebelling, Ralph was trying his best to keep
the island together.

Symbolism In Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird
1727 Words - 7 Pages.... during the early twentieth century. Harper Lee's
effective use of racial symbolism can be seen by studying various examples
from the book. This includes the actions of the children, the racist whites,
and the actions of Atticus Finch.
The actions of the children in this novel certainly do have their
share of symbolism. For instance, the building of a snowman by Jem and
Scout one winter is very symbolic. There was not enough snow to make a
snowman entirely out of snow, so Jem made a foundation out of dirt, and
then covered it with what snow they had. One could interpret this in two
different ways. First of all, the creation of the snowman by Jem can be
seen as being symb ....

The Heart Of Darkness: The Horror!
1453 Words - 6 Pages.... The horror in Heart of Darkness has been
critiqued to represent different aspects of situations in the book. However,
Kurtz's last words "The horror! The horror!" refer, to me, to magnify only
three major aspects. The horror magnifies Kurtz not being able to restrain
himself, the colonizers' greed, and Europe's darkness.
Kurtz comes to the Congo with noble intentions. He thought that each
ivory station should stand like a beacon light, offering a better way of life
to the natives. He was considered to be a "universal genius": he was an orator,
writer, poet, musician, artist, politician, ivory producer, and chief agent of
the ivory company's Inner Station. yet, he was ....
