The story also shows that Walter Mitty is a really stubborn person. When he was dropping off Mrs. Mitty, Mrs. Mitty told Walter Mitty not to forget the overshoes he was sopposed to buy while in he was town. Walter Mitty's reaction was "I don't need overshoes,"(88) but he did give in to his wife in the end, and bought the overshoes. Another incident that shows Walter Mitty is stubborn occurs when his wife told him to put his gloves on, ....

Another good example of symbolism, brought to my attention by a site visitor, is the shape of the island. The boat shape of the island is an ancient symbol of civilization. The water current around the island seems to be "flowing backwards," giving the subtle impression that civilization may be going backwards for the island or its inhabitants. Additionally, ....

He later learns to appreciate Sandra Street and sees the finer aspects of it after talking to his teacher, Mr. Blades, who tells him to open his eyes and be more aware of the good things in Sandra Street. Steve then goes on a walk with his teacher and realizes the significance of his home. Steve recognizes the finer aspects of his neighborhood and sees beautiful features that he had never notices before. By the end of the story, it did not matter what others said about his neighborhood because he was proud of living on Sandra Street. In the ....

She left Cosette in the hands of the Thenardiers, who not only made her hate, but also feel hated. Jean Valjean, an ex-convict who had been on the run from the authority most of his life, took Cosette into his own hands by request of Fantine before she died. Before he had Cosette in his custody, he had already change his name to Monsieur Madeleine. This character name change got me off track at a point in the story. Mary French becomes increasingly aware of just how phony and self-centered these guests really are as she watches the party unfold, "Mary was looking at it all through a humming haze like seeing a play from way up in a smoky balcony" (1529). Simultaneously, Eveline acknowledges that her life, a reflection of self-centered capitalism, is in fact a waste. Eveline admits, "You know it does seem too silly to spend your life filling up rooms with illassorted people who really hate each other" (1530). This moment ....
