This paper explains the character of the grandmother, and irony, symbolism and foreshadowing displayed by the author, Flannery O'Connor. There are several sitruational ironies dispersed in the story. At the begininning, the grandmother is opposed to go to Florida on vacation, but when the stime arrives to depart, she is the first passenger seated in the car. Another example is the entire time she is trying to change Bailey's mind, she used a prison escape as the primary reason not to procee ....

.... logically, is about the mothers' childhoods in China, the period of time during which their personalities were molded, giving the reader a better sense of their "true" selves, since later in the book the daughters view their mothers in a different and unflattering light. Tan does this so the reader can see the stories behind both sides and so as not to judge either side unfairly. This section, titled Feathers From a Thousand Li Away, is aptly named, since it describes the heritage of the mothers in China, a legacy that they wished to bestow on their daughters, as the little story in the beginning signifies. For many years, the mothers did not tell their daughters their storie ....

In examining Sethe’s character we can see that her motivations derive from her deep love towards her children, and from the lack of love for herself. Sethe’s children are her only good quality. Her children are a part of her and in killing one she kills a part of herself. What hinders over Sethe is her refusal to accept responsibility for her baby’s death. Does she do this because she is selfishness or because it need not be justified? Sethe’s love is clearly displayed by sparing her daughter from a horrific life, yet, Sethe refuses to acknowledge ....

Homer’s male characters in The Odyssey consistently treated women differently and unequally throughout The Odyssey. Concurrent with the time’s belief that women held a subservient position in society to men, the male characters in The Odyssey often expected certain traits and actions that they didn’t expect from men. Also all the societies and lands Odysseus visited that were inhabited by mortals were dominated by men. In The Odyssey women are unequal, treated differently, and are considered inferior to men. Throughout the epic women are not given an appropriate amount ....

He saw one of his poles have a jerk so he pulled it in and it was a bonita fish, which he was goin to use for a nice piece of bait later in the day. The day progressed and he saw a real big jerk on the pole. He jumped up and held it, but the fish was not hooked yet. A couple more jerks he felt, but the fish was not taking it. Finally the fish did and he could feel that it had to be a fish of enormous size. He could not pull it up because it was so strong. He had to hold onto it until the fish was tired and decided to come up. Then when it would come up, he would take his harpoon and stab it in the heart so ....

That night Carrie and Jerry decide to climb the big brick fence that surrounded the house. They just wanted to check out what was there. They got their flashlights and shovels and started walking toward the house. They climbed the fence and had a rough drop down the fence. They looked around and saw huge plans; they were shaped like animals. Jerry looked up and saw a lion with wings; it was so big that he could fit his head into its mouth…If he wanted to. Jerry and Carrie were both scared, but ....

In addition, his theories on life and society prove to be very degrading, not to mention influential to his mind set every day. Willy believes that being well-liked and having a personal attractiveness, together, can bring success, money, and many friends. Ironically, Willy does not have many friends and many people do not like him. With a beauty unlike others, Willy thinks that doors will open and problems will all disappear. As a salesman, Willy developed many hindrances that caused his mind to deteriorate. His life as a salesman was built on a dream that ....

He tries to deny the jealousy by figuring: " I was more certainly becoming the best student in the school; Phineas was without question the best athlete, so in that way we were even.
