When Gene and Finny emerge from the Devon, they feel clean and refreshed. However, Gene describes the Naguamsett as "ugly, saline, fringed with marsh, mud and seaweed" (68). When Gene starts a fight with Quackenbush and falls into the Naguamsett because Quackenbush calls Gene "a maimed son-of-a-bitch," Gene surfaces from the Naguamsett feeling grimy, dirty and in desperate need of a bath (71). Much like the clean, refreshing water of the Devon and the ugly saline water of the Naguamsett, Gene's carefree attitude of the summer session vastly ....

Eventually, the goddess of war asked Gilgamesh to marry her but he refused, making her very angry. She retaliates by sending the bull of heaven down to attack Gilgamesh and Enkidu. In the battle, they killed the bull, but Enkidu injured his hand; he eventually died from his wound. ....

In the book The Scarlet Letter, By Nathaniele Hawthorne, The protagonist, Hester Prynne, is punished for an act of adultery. Her sentence was to bear a scarlet letter of "A" upon her bosom. This punishment is a form of public humiliation. In the 1620's this form of punishment was one of the severest sentences given. The people would want the guilty to suffer in front of his fellow man.
