The Scarlet Letter: Platform Of Sin
1054 Words - 4 Pages.... of the congregation discuss Hester's
crime of adultery: “This woman has brought shame upon us all, and ought to
die” (Hawthorne 59). The scaffold allows Hester Prynne's sin to be
publicized and marveled at by the New Englanders. It is here that the
reader becomes aware of Hester being shunned as an outsider, when she is
placed on the scaffold: “Knowing well her part, she ascended a flight of
wooden steps, and was thus displayed to the surrounding multitude, at about
the height of a mans shoulders above the street . . . . The unhappy culprit
sustained herself as best a woman might, under the heavy weight of a
thousand unrelenting eyes” (63-64). At the ....

The Great Gatsby: Being Successful
601 Words - 3 Pages.... of The Great Gatsby.
In Noel Perrin’s short story… I think it is a short story, he discusses America’s relationship with the color green and its correlation’s with The Great Gatsby. The green element in this novel is literally (no pun intended) taken from the green light at the end of the dock extending from his mansion. When we think of the color green we can associate it with a few things. The majority of the things in nature are green, leaves, plants, and the grass. Green represents a peaceful color; one that does not hurt the eye when put in direct line of sight. An example of a color that would lash out at you and scream, “hey look at me, I’m noticea ....

drunk man proceeds to assault Dick without cause, and without fear of
retaliation. This is because he knows that a black man is powerless in the
society of the time.
Society brings us to the second conflict, which is Prosser's
conflict with society. One night, without warning, he begins a killing
spree which spans the better part of a day, and spawns a fatal manhunt. His
conflict with the society in general is characterized by his indiscriminate
choice of victims. These victims range from a police officer to an innocent
black man looking out his window, to several citizens who try to put an end
to his madness. This conflict is stopped when the m ....

An Analysis Of The Jay Gatsby
1162 Words - 5 Pages.... his clothes. The shirts and clothes that are ordered every spring and fall show his simplexes in expressing his wealth to his beloved Daisy. His "beautiful shirts . . . It makes me sad because I've never seen such beautiful shirts before" (98). It seems silly to cry over simple shirts, but they symbolize an American Dream which people desire. These shirts represent the opulent manner of
Gatsby's wealth and his ability to try and purchase Daisy's love, this time through the use of extensive clothing.
Fitzgerald wisely shows how Gatsby uses his riches to buy Daisy. In the story, we know that "They were careless people, Tom and Daisy--they smashed up things . . . and then retu ....

Catcher In The Rye: Holden Goes Through A Fall From His Innocence
969 Words - 4 Pages.... things he can name that he liked were Allie, James Castle, and
sitting there chewing the fat with Phoebe. The reason this is a time when
Holden falls is because he gets really depressed when he can barely think
of anything he liked. The reason I think Holden gets so depressed is
because two of the people he names are dead. That's why he is so lonely
all the time. Holden finds things in common with Allie and James Castle
and since they're both dead he feels, in the back of his mind, that he
should also be dead which makes him depressed.
Another example of a fall for Holden is when he realizes he can't erase
even half the "fuck you's" in the world. This doesn't s ....
