It is the driving force behind many character's quarrels with the King. Morgause seduced Arthur and produced Mordred out of her desire for revenge on Uther, Arthur's father, for the murder of the Duke of Cornwall, her father, and Uther's marriage to Igraine, her mother. Mordred himself plotted the war against the King because he was the King's illegitimate child. Against her husband’s request, Mrs. Reed does not treat Jane like a human being and is constantly criticizing and punishing her. He also uses his philosophy of the utopian society to show how very far short of being perfect our culture falls. He uses it to contrast the experiences that Candide had throughout his journeys.
